Picture the scene: I'm battling an incessant 25-30 mph headwind on my first ever sportive (82 miles around the Trossachs). I'm in my lowest gear, pedalling as hard as I can and only travelling along at 6 mph, when, suddenly a gust blows me off the tarmac and into the dirt at the side of the road.
