Don't expect Schlawbe to reply to you
Bought this tyre ready for winter. The advisory with the tyre stated that the tyre must be run in before using it on ice etc... I did what the advisory said which was to take the tyre for a 20/25km cycle whilst not accelerating nor braking hard throughout this process. I road nice and gentle all the way. At the end of the journey I had lost six spikes. Not to worry I thought, I won't send the tyre back, I'll just ask Schlawbe to send me six spikes and I'll insert them into the tyre myself. Their own site says this can be done, with pliers. However, getting a reply from Schlawbe is a nightmare. I have used their customer submit form on three occassions and not once have they replied back to me. I'll keep the tyre, just don't expect good, if any, customer service if you lose your spikes.
Good on ice, less so on snow!
These tyres are a bit odd, firstly, they're very heavy, quite difficult to get on and you have to run them in for 25 miles, even with careful running, you will lose a few studs, a quick email to Schwalbe and some replacements arrived gratis. Riding them on tarmac is odd, they make a crackling noise like you're riding on bubble wrap, grip on wet hard surfaces is not brilliant either, one particular corner that is no problem even on CX tyres made the Winters begin to slide.
Of course extreme conditions are where these tyre are able to shine, the first inclination you get that you are on ice is that the tyres go quiet as the studs dig in and grip, great for ungritted cycle paths.
On snow, things are not as rosy, the treads cannot cope with any more than a skim and the tyre just lets go, not as bad as a normal treaded urban tyre, but nowhere near as good as the knobbles on my MTB, if you live in snowy areas, you'd be better off with a CX tyre or an MTB on Ice Spikers.
